Northern Quarter Pool League

Another season nears completion…

It’s that time of the year again as we reach the final few rounds of this year’s competition. There are now just three weeks left before this season’s league matches are completed. There’s still plenty of action to be found over the next couple of months with the Team KO, as well as the final rounds of the Individuals and Pairs KO competitions.

Current League Standings

The League table is extremely close at the top, with the Wheatsheaf Oaks and Steven Charles Snooker teams trading places and just three rounds left to play. With the third placed team of the Derby Brewery Arms ‘A’ adrift three wins behind, it looks like being a two horse race to the line.

The Gallon league has also been exceptionally close this year, with five teams all tied on the same points just a few weeks ago. There’s still all to play for in the remaining games, with two wins between first and fifth places. We may yet end up with a playoff again in this competition to decide the eventual winners of those highly desirable exclusive glass tankards.

Knock Out Cups

The remaining individuals and pairs KO fixtures have now been published, you can find them under the KO Cups link in the menu, or by clicking here. The quarter and semi finals will take place in November, with the finals in February in the weeks before the presentation.

Team KO fixtures will be drawn at the November meeting and the matches will take place in December/January.

2017 AGM & The Future

Burton Arms Hotel
Burton Arms Hotel, Swan St – Former league venue…

With the disappearance of yet another pool venue from the Northern Quarter area this year, the future of the league is looking rather bleak yet again. Despite the declining number of venues in the league – and indeed the demise of many traditional pool friendly pubs in the Northern Quarter – we continue to have a strong and faithful line up of teams and players.

Many of these players have participated in the league for several years, including some who have been with us since the league’s inception over 20 years ago.

A few of our previous league venues such as the Crown & Anchor (Hilton St) and the City Pub (Oldham St) continue to house pool tables, but find it difficult to recruit regular players to form a team.

There are also a few other potential venues around the area, such as the Black Dog Ballroom, the Green and the Shack, which continue to provide facilities for the needs of pool players in the Northern Quarter. All of these venues, and any others we haven’t mentioned, may be open to hosting teams in the league should anyone decide to express an interest.

The 2017 League AGM will take place on the first Wednesday in February, team enrolment for the 2017-2018 season will take place at this meeting as usual.

New teams wishing to join the league should sign up to the website through the Register link to access further information, and most importantly ensure that they turn up to the AGM to put forward their proposal for entry.

Good luck and best wishes to all!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our members for their continued support and dedication to the Northern Quarter Pool League, and their devotion to the traditional pub game of 8 ball pool.

We would also like to express our gratitude to Pete for his continued help with the collection and entry of the individual results as the unofficial Deputy League Secretary!
